Emma's birth story went pretty smoothly, for the most part.  My husband and I arrived at the hospital the night before to start the process of inducing labor.  The next day, full-on labor was underway and after a few hours of seeing what the pains of labor felt like, I got this one really massive contraction that lasted what seemed like forever.  As soon as it was over I told the nurses I was ready for my epidural, and from that point on all was right with the world.  My doctor had me labor down for a few hours, so when it came time to push it only took about 30 minutes for my baby girl to arrive.   It was 10:30 in the evening.  

I was looking forward to that sandwich the nurses promised me after an entire day of ice chips.  Then my doctor showed me the placenta.  That was lovely.  Believe it or not, I was still hungry!  My epidural was wearing off and I started to feel the excruciating pain from my doctor pushing on my belly to remove the afterbirth.  Then doc told me I needed a D&E to remove the rest of it.  That was scary.  I didn't really know what was happening and thought my life was in danger. 

By the time the surgery and recovery were over and I finally got back to my room, it was 3:30am.  I was exhausted, and I wanted to call everyone to give them the exciting news, but I was too tired.  In the morning, certain family members arrived who didn't leave until well after visiting hours.  Sometimes, visitors don't know when to give the patient a break!  Needless to say, there was absolutely no time to call all of the people on my list, and I felt bad that I didn't get a chance to deliver my special announcement to everyone.  It would have been wonderful to have had Baby's First Phone Call.
