Make Your Own Weed Killer

weed This spring and summer I had two rivals.  Pollen and weeds.  Thankfully, it seems as though the pollen count is going down, but there is no stopping the darn weeds.  They’re popping up everywhere, including my veggie garden, plant beds and in the crevices of my patio.  I weed every day.  If only my plants were this hardy.

Have you seen the price of the bottled weed killer sold in hardware stores?  I own this hardcover book that I love called Homemade: How-to Make Hundreds of Everyday Products Fast, Fresh, and More Naturally (Paperback)that I turn to for all kinds of homemade remedies and sure enough, there is a super easy way to make weed killer using only two ingredients.
This is what you’ll need:
  • A refillable spray bottle
  • Boiling Water
  • Household Bleach
Fill the spray bottle with 95% boiling water and 5% bleach.  Shake well, and spray onto the weeds.  Make sure children and pets are not nearby.  This worked well for me on the weeds that invaded my patio pavers.  The weeds did resist and I made the mixture stronger using a larger percentage of bleach and treated them a second time. If you have plants near your weeds, you can isolate the plants by placing a bottomless water jug over them.

  2. Wow, what a great tip!
That would be SO much cheaper and I would feel better about spraying that in my yard than the other toxins we have used in the past. I am always hesitant about using products b/c I'm afraid my kids might get into them. However, I do really need to get these weeds taken care of and I don't see myself going out on a daily basis right now with the heat and my size...ha ha!

  3. HOLY SMOKES AND I JUST bought some today and spent fifteen bucks! I've got those patio creepers. I'm going to try it tomorrow! That's fantastic. I'll let you know what happened. Thanks for stopping by too. Did you see my give away. Those are a few of the songs we did when the band was together. They're all songs my husband wrote. Give it a try. It's almost over and there's low entries. THANKS!

  5. Another recipe for homemade weed killer is: empty spray bottle, vinegar, dish detergent (dawn) and salt. Mix 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup dish detergent and fill bottle with vinegar. Do not use where you want plants to grow. Great for weeds in cracks. I am using it on our gravel driveway.
