Like I’ve mentioned before, a great garden takes a ton of hard work, patience and persistence. I tend to focus on it more during than summer months than any other time of year, but I want that to change. Now matter how experienced you are, there’s always more to learn. Now I’ve got three bibles to refer to when it comes to gardening in the For Dummies books.
Organic Gardening for Dummies
This book is perfect for people who want to grow fruits and vegetables without all of those nasty chemicals, but it’s also great for those who are environmentally conscious (and what gardener isn’t?). From building a healthy soil that your plants will thrive in, to battling disease and pests in a natural way and determining the right plants and trees for your part of the world—it’s all here in this book.
My favorite tip from Organic Gardening For Dummies (so far): You can repel Deer by using soap, hair, or a spray repellant made of eggs and water. I can’t wait to try out this repellant to hopefully keep my deer from feasting on my plants.
Roses for Dummies
I was really excited to dig into this book, having never grown a rose in my life. My mother always had them in their garden, and I’ve been told they’re not difficult to manage, so I can’t wait to try the advice given in the book. This book is thicker than I expected it to be – there’s a lot of information to learn on this one subject!
This book outlines how to landscape using roses, help with choosing the right rose for you, finding the right containers, and even how to make potpourri from your dried roses! I can’t wait to try that.
My favorite tip yet: After you deadhead the flowers, discard them. Usually with other flowers I keep them nearby to avoid insects and disease. For some reason I thought it was good for the soil. Won’t make that mistake again!
Composting for Dummies
This is the book I was most looking forward to receiving, as I’ve been planning on creating a compost heap. A compost pile is a mixture of yard clippings, leftover kitchen scraps and straw that will turn into a nutrient rich soil for your gardening needs. Soil is expensive, and why not use what you’ve got lying around to make your own instead of adding it to a garbage dump somewhere? I’ve been studying this book, which outlines the different compost bins that you can buy or make yourself, choosing a location, how to manage your compost pile, prevent pests from invading and much more!
Favorite tip so far: You can also add weeds to your compost! I wouldn’t have thought, but yes it is true!
I’ve always been a fan of For Dummies books – they’re great for learning just about anything!
GIVEAWAY – Three readers will each win one of the above books!
