Over the weekend, we met up with friends who are expecting their first baby in a few months’ time. Earlier in the day, they were working on their registry, so baby gear quickly became one of the main topics of discussion. The mommy-to-be was quizzing us on few matters, one of them being beds. More specifically, when does a child move from the crib to a toddler bed, and what’s the difference between toddler beds and twin beds?
We didn’t have a clear answer for her, and it got me thinking. Well, to be honest, I’ve been having some anxiety about it over the past few weeks. From what I’ve heard, many people make the switch when their child reaches two or three years old, depending on the child. Emma is very tall, so I think she may outgrow her crib earlier than normal. At 19 months, her height is equivalent to that of a 2 1/2 year-old.
Of course it would be nice for her to have a little more room, but I’m not looking forward to making this switch. I know at some point, the crib will no longer be an option. Like when potty training begins. But I’m just worried she might get out of bed and get into something or worse, pull down a piece of furniture over top of her. Am I being a little neurotic here? Maybe.
It’s one more thing to stress over in the sea of concerns that I have for my daughter. But I will get through it, one chest pain/grey hair at a time.
So this is what my mother was talking about.
The switch wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, and we did it really early because of moving . . . around 22 months actually.
ReplyDeleteAt 26 months our bug is still in her crib & I plan on keeping her in it until she can get out! lol! She's tall but not that coordinated so she hasn't figured out how to get out & really doesn't try. Makes me happy to know that she's contained at night & naptime!

We switched our first over at 2 and it was easy peasy. Our 2nd we switched over at about 19 months because she's a climber..she still gets out of the bed and runs around her room when she's supposed to be sleeping so we make sure her room is super safe and put up a safety gate so she can't get out.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, you're not neurotic, you're a mommy!
You're just being a loving and concerned mommy! It will be ok, and you'll know when the time is right.

ReplyDeleteI was SOOO worried about making the switch, mainly b/c I didn't want Lily roaming around her room, had visions of her pulling the dresser down on top of herself. We converted her crib to a toddler bed and it was fine. Absolutely fine. Good luck!
