Are Newspapers Becoming a Thing of the Past?

paper

Around here, Sunday newspapers get delivered on Saturday.  The idea being that people want a head start at reading the sale flyers for stores so that they can use the entire day on Sunday to shop.  A few years ago, we stopped getting the Sunday paper because we found that we rarely ever read it.  It was a waste of money, and our time and energy just having to wrap it up for recycling.

Once in a while I pick one up in the grocery store on a Sunday.  Primarily for the coupon inserts.  I only clip what I know I’ll use, and sometimes that only means one or two coupons.  I’m starting to question if it’s really worth it.  There are now a myriad of coupon websites where consumers can print the coupons that they need.  It just seems like a big waste of paper and ink to me.  Especially when we mostly read our news online these days.

Now that we have television, internet and radio as our main resources for news, is there really a need for the newspaper?  And by the way, none of those other media leave ink on your fingers.  The phone book is another great example.  It’s much faster to google someone’s phone number than to haul out the big fat phonebook, and then you have to store it somewhere.

The one benefit I can still see is for local newspapers.  Local news sources are lacking in that they don’t all have websites in which to report on local news and upcoming events.  But I think it will eventually come to fruition.

What do you think?  Do you still read the newspaper, or is it a total waste?

  1. No newspaper here. It's pretty biased anyway in my parts-- not too mention it's expensive, dirty and a waste of paper trees. I like my news from online or tv if I have to.

  2. I only get the newspaper for three things : coupon inserts ( I use them a lot), comics for my husband, and flyers.
I never read the newspaper for news, it tends to just depress me, and I would rather selectively read news articles online.
The newspaper is rather a waste, I agree.

  3. We still get the paper daily. My hubby reads quite a bit of it. I'll skim through it now and then, but I get enough news from watching it every morning for about an hour.

  4. We only get our small local newspaper, which is just published once per week (!). My parents still get the daily newspaper, and my Mom is nice enough to pass along the coupon inserts to me.

I just talked to someone this weekend whose son is studying journalism in college. She said he's planning to work in on-line journalism and has no aspirations of every working for an actual print publication. I think we all suspect they're a dying breed.

  5. I buy the paper for the coupon inserts only. I never read it because I can rarely find a "hard news" article without some sort of commentary. I studied journalism in high school and college, and it's just sad to me to see the state of newspapers today. I don't think they'll ever go away, but they are having a very rough time right now!
