Winning Style: Fashion for Dummies by Jill Martin Giveaway!

You may recognize Jill Martin from her fashion segments on The Today Show.   She’s one of my favorite contributors there, and now I’m happy to own her complete style guide in Fashion For Dummies.  This paperback is a must-have for every woman.  It’s just over 300 pages and about a solid inch thick – packed with tips, tricks and advice for finding your own personal style.

In this book, you’ll discover what looks good on you – from color to style and fit – and so much more.  If you’re into detail, you can learn about how fabrics are made and the different types of fibers that may be used in a particular material.  But if you just want to get down to the nitty gritty, you can skip over to the section all about what to wear to a black tie event.  It just shows the broad spectrum of information provided in this book. 

I love this brief video which demonstrates several ways to transform a scarf.  Like Jill says, it’s more than an accessory for your neck.

 

If you enjoyed this video, you will love Fashion For Dummies.  Throughout the book, Jill shares favorite resources and products to make fashion work.  There are several full color illustrations that will give even the fashion novice some solid schooling.  I love the fact that there is a detailed index in the back so that I can quickly and easily find the advice specific to my question.

 

As I said before, this guide is packed with information, so it’s impossible to tell you everything that’s inside.  One of my favorite tips has to do with over-accessorizing.  It’s not easy to tell if you’ve gone overboard.  I really like Jill’s tip on page 270, which instructs you to put on all of your baubles with your back turned to the mirror.  Turn around to see yourself.  Whatever you notice first is the piece that you should remove.  Isn’t that genious?!

 

There are so many pointers, but I don’t want to spill all of her secrets!  The books sells for only $24.99.  That’s a bargain price considering the hundreds of dollars I invested in bad fashion choices!

Over the weekend, my sister-in-law and I were discussing the possible link between improper footwear and back problems later in life.  A good quality shoe is an investment in the health of your child’s developing feet ,which is why I am willing to spend more on a great shoe than I would on a fancy t-shirt.  You get what you pay for, and that can’t be more true of anything as it is with footwear. 

However, that doesn’t mean that they need to look like orthopedic shoes and be void of style and fun.  See Kai Run footwear is just as adorable on your child’s feet as they are healthy for them.   This footwear brand has been awarded the American Podiatric Medical Association's prestigious Seal of Acceptance.

We received a pair of Taylor-gray shoes to review.  This is our second pair of See Kai Run shoes, so you know that we are already big fans of this children’s footwear brand.  The Taylor shoe is a new-for-fall style that I absolutely love.  This season gray is the new basic, which is a nice break from the browns you normally see in stores this time of year.  But if brown is what you want, the Taylor style is available in that color too. 

Emma’s new Maryjanes feature a lavender sunburst just above the big toe.  The detailing is beautiful and deserves to be seen up close.

The Maryjane style is beyond cute, but also so easy to get on and off thanks to the adjustable velcro closure.  They’re all leather from the top to the insole to allow feet to breathe and keep dry, and the rubber sole will bend right along with her feet so as not to get in the way of her active lifestyle.

I have my eye on a few other pairs that would complement my daughter’s fall wardrobe.  Just try and visit See Kai Run and choose your favorite.  It isn’t easy, but it will be worth your while.

Jewelry, in particular can transform your day from dull and boring to vibrant and fun.  That’s the way I feel when I wear the Nyla earrings by Kendra Scott.  I was sent a pair in cobalt blue, with bright and vivid marquis-cut stones set in 14K Gold plated over brass.  They are right in line with one of the hottest trends today: bold eye-catching earrings.

They’re less costume-y due to the use of high quality materials.  I know a few women that can only wear 14K gold earrings so this is a great way to keep your ears healthy while getting a great stylish look.  I can’t stop visiting the Kendra Scott website.  I don’t think there is one piece there that I don’t love.  This could be a minor problem!

When I was getting Emma’s closet ready for fall, I discovered the Pediped Originals I had reviewed back in March.  I decided to try them on her with my fingers crossed, but they no longer fit her growing feet.  It was a sad moment for me; partly because my little baby is no longer a baby, but mostly because I loved the Grace shoe from Pediped.

There are three lines offered by Pediped footwear.  The Originals® mimic barefoot walking for children who are learning to walk, the Grip ‘n’ Go™ line is for the kids who are transitioning from those first few steps until they develop a confident stride, and the Flex® is for experienced little walkers and runners.

Emma is now in that experienced walker phase, though she specializes in running.  We received the Giselle style from the Flex line.  They’re a chocolate brown leather shoe with pastel dots.  What I first noticed just by looking at them as they came out of the box is that they’re adorable and perfect for fall.   But what really makes these shoes special is all in the engineering.

First, they’re made from leather to allow her feet to breathe.  Also, the sole is flexible to keep up with her activities.  Emma likes to stand on her tippy toes and walk around, and she can actually do that wearing these Flex shoes.  Finally, the heel cushion distributes foot pressure evenly, which is an essential quality to ensure foot health.  

With the rate at which Emma’s feet are growing, I greatly appreciate the Pediped Flex Fit System.  The insole that comes along with the shoe provides an additional 2mm of thickness to the inside of the shoes, which can be removed as little feet grow and extra room is needed.  Every shoe should have this!  Sure, you can always buy a size up but with Flex Fit, the shoe will fit nice and snugly to begin with.

What kind of kicks do you wear when it rains?  Usually I forget about trying to look good, and just wear a pair of old shoes that I don’t care about.  But if it happens to be a day when I can’t get away with dressing in yoga pants and sneakers – like when I have to work or attend a fancy event – I have very few options.  This is the reason why I’ve ruined countless pairs of shoes by walking in the rain and dashing through the sometimes unavoidable rain puddles.   It’s all downhill once the water gets inside your shoes. 

Wouldn’t it be great if you could morph high fashion footwear with the rain boot?  Well you don’t have to, because däv has already done it.  The company is based in southern Calfornia, where the luxurious made-for-rain footwear is designed, produced and sold.  There are all kinds of styles offered; from flats to dress shoes boots.   It’s practical footwear in disguise.

I haven’t worn rain boots since I was a kid.  From what I remember, they looked a lot more like galoshes than fine footwear.  Perhaps that’s why I never wore them past grade three.  They certainly never alookednything even close to the däv equestrian boots I was sent.  I love the classic riding style of these boots, they’re fashionable while being waterproof.  They also feature a fleece lining to keep your legs and calves warm and dry.  This is excellent for rain on a cold fall or winter day.  They’re so warm,you could even make them work for snowy weather.

There is a stretch panel for a fit that is close to the leg, as well as a spur holder at the back.  Where’s my horse?  Seriously though, these boots are great because they don’t look like rain boots.  If I wore them on a sunny day, no one would even notice that they were any different.

Personally, I found the stretch panel to be slightly tight on my calves.  Unfortunately, my legs are not small there.  I think if I give them time to break in, they’ll fit more comfortably.  Otherwise they feel great, even without wearing socks because of the comfy fleece lining.

Rain boots have certainly come a long way since my childhood.

It’s a thousand times more fun to shop for my daughter at the present moment.  That comes along with motherhood, I suppose.  Everything looks good on the little bodies we brought into the world not too long ago, and kids look too cute wearing their miniature fashions.  Now that fall is here, I get to go crazy again and snatch up a whole new wardrobe—for the little princess, that is.

Zutano was the brainchild of two successful artists who became parents.  Once they started living and breathing parenthood, they were given a new focus.  The natural progression for these parents was to use their creative talent to develop a line of children’s clothing that is unique, stylish and comfortable.  Those are all of the qualities I search for when dressing my toddler and I don’t think I’m alone there.  It’s no wonder the brand has achieved such great success over the past few decades.

I featured this great kids clothing brand in 2009 when I reviewed an outfit that was at the time to large on Emma.  She has grown into it as kids do, and she wears it often.  I’m always happy to dress her in it since it’s is so soft and comfortable, and we continue to get compliments on her fabulous style.   One other quality I’d like to note is its resistance to staining.  My girl is hardly the neat and tidy type and most of her shirts are stained beyond recognition, but the Zutano tee has held up.  I’m so pleased with the quality.

Don’t you think she’d make a great little model?  The brooding type though, it’s hard to get her to smile for the camera!

The heartly Viola Top and black skinny leggings look absolutely darling on her.  They’re a part of the toddler interlock collection.  The top is so whimsical and colorful and the pleating at the neckline is so feminine. The leggings are a great basic that will coordinate with any top or sweater. The outfit is so easy and soft for the highest comfort, and is adorable to boot.  It’s not cutesy, but all cute..  I think we found a go-to outfit for Autumn. 

Zutano is available at retailers across the United States.  The company has been selling their Itsy Bitsy line direct in their online boutique which fits babies ages 0-3 months.  But the store is temporarily closed until October as they re-stock for fall.  In the coming months the larger toddler collection will be offered there too!

Winning Style: Look thinner in Miraclebody Jeans Giveaway!

My torso isn’t what it used to be.  I can no longer get away with wearing low-rise style pants.  Having kids will do that to you.  When that’s the fashion trend it’s difficult to find anything else, which is why I love the companies that do their own thing.  Like Miraclebody, for instance.

You may have heard about the slimming Miraclebody swimwear, but did you know they offer jeans too?  I didn’t until just recently when I was sent a pair of Boot Cut, Classic Pocket jeans.  The claim is that they make you look 10 lbs. lighter in 10 seconds – the time it takes you to slip them on.

When I first stepped into my Miraclebody jeans, it was love.  Here’s why.

Mission cover and conceal
They fit nice and high up to the waist to help keep all of that post-baby baggage in place.  Which brings me to a point.  The models pictured on the Miraclebody website may have really high belly buttons, but the waistline on the jeans fit way above mine.  I’m not complaining though.  That’s the way I like it!  Other than hiding that bulge, the higher profile is great when you take a seat as you won’t be revealing your behind.

A slimmer appearance
Within the first few moments of my husband seeing these jeans on he--not knowing anything about the product, said to me, “You look like you just lost ten pounds.”  True story.  I need all of the help I can get these days, so you can bet that I will be buying more of these jeans.

They go a long way
The pant legs are very long, perfect for pairing them up with a high heeled boot for fall.  Even if they do shrink a little in the wash, they will never fall short and this only accentuates the slimming effect.

I experimented with shapewear a short while after my daughter came into the world.  We had her Christening a few weeks after she was born, and I was having a hard time fitting into old clothes or looking decent in new, larger outfits.  The shorts I tried felt too tight, too hot, and whatever was compressed beneath them just spilled out of the top anyway.  I thought, ‘What’s the point?’ and ended up returning them to the store.  I tried different styles, but nothing worked out.

So instead of buying fitted clothing, I went with baggy clothes that draped over my damaged body to hide the flaws.  Unflattering, to say the least. 

When I saw the wide selection of undergarments by Annette, I became interested again.  Particularly the high-back styles, which prevent the spillover you get with other shapewear garments that just go up to your waistline.  I wore one of those yesterday, and the waistband kept curling down which only accentuated my problem area.  Who needs that?

The Seamless Shapewear High-back Panty is fuss-free.  The clever undergarment is a part of the Annette Secret Weapons collection.  It does indeed prevent spillover and because it ends just under the bust, you can still wear your own separate bra.  It event helps support the bustline, which is great.  This design also features a molded seat to lift the buttocks.

It definitely helped to smooth things out for me, but I think I could have gotten a better result with the next size down.  I didn’t really fill out the molded seat area, so it was a little baggy there.  The straps are adjustable, and the closure at the crotch makes bathroom breaks easy.

But the real test came when I put them to use.  I tried the inserts in a loafer shoe that I wear often.  It has very little to zero arch support.  You can clearly see the difference in the arch in the shoe with the grey insert.  There is no missing that.  And when I walked on these inserts it felt like I was walking on clouds.  The insoles do add some height, obviously so bear that in mind.  This particular pair of loafers did not fit as well on with the insert as they do without due to their low profile.  However, I know these will be a godsend this fall when I’m wearing my boots.

I used to turn my nose up at flats, or any shoe with a heel that didn’t qualify as a stiletto.  The higher, the better was my motto.  I liked the way high heels encouraged good posture and made me look taller and leaner. 

That was back when I had no real responsibilities.  Before motherhood, play dates and household errands.  I do a lot of walking around now and I have no time for painful footwear.  These days, comfort comes first, but that doesn’t mean I have to start wearing shoes that look like grandma’s orthopedics.

This is where Scarpasa comes in, making shoes that “take the worry out of walking”.  Scarpasa offers lower heeled shoes for women who want great style, but won’t sacrifice comfort.  After all, shoes are made for walking, right?  Might as well wear a pair you can actually walk in!  This site specializes in footwear that will easily take any girl from day to night made by independent European designers.

Even though fashion may not be my main concern on any given day, I still want to look great.  I feel like my day goes a whole lot more smoothly when I’m together and armed with confidence. That’s how I feel when I wear the Praerie – Rosalia flats.  These babies were made in Italy, the mecca of fine footwear.  The Praerie shoe is available in several different colors, but I chose my favorite hue: green.  I don’t own any other shoes in this shade, so this pretty pair will give my wardrobe a nice shot of color.

They are all leather, from the sole to the lining.  The leather is actually covered with the pretty patterned fabric that you see above, and the shoe is then adorned with a gleaming jewel set in a silver-plated buckle shape.  I have to admit, the jewels seemed to be a bit much when I first tried these on, but now I love them.  I’m picturing these flats with a pair of jeans and a nice tailored blazer for fall.

They fit – and they’re comfortable!

As stated on the product page, the Praerie – Rosalia flats run very small.  It was recommended that I order a half size up, but when I did they were still too small.  Scarpasa’s free return policy came to the rescue and I was able to quickly and easily get the correct size, which was one and a half sizes larger than my usual.

It can be a stressful event when you lose sight of your child.  They have a way of sneaking off and getting into trouble rather quickly.  My child doesn’t answer when I call her name, which is nerve-wracking.  I know that I am not alone here, which is why it was important for me to feature Wee Squeak in this Fall Fashion event. 

Wee Squeak makes kids shoes that are not only stylish, but they help us parents keep an ear on our kids even when we may not be able to see them.  As the name suggests, the shoes squeak every time your child takes a step.  I think they’re the most clever idea to come to children's fashion, and kids love them too.  My daughter squeaks with excitement every time her shoes squeak!

 

I think little girls look absolutely adorable in boots, especially cute ones like the Brown Pansy Boots I picked out for Emma.  Fall isn’t officially here for another week and a half, but the weather has certainly cooled down quite a bit, so Emma’s been wearing her new boots whenever possible.  Especially since her mama didn’t order the right size, so they are already pretty snug on her.  The last time I ordered from Wee Squeak, I ordered them too large, but I am learning that as fast as little feet grow, a little extra space doesn’t hurt. 

This is my favorite shoe yet from Wee Squeak.  The quilting on this boot is beautiful, and it has a faux fur top with a pansy-decorated band for my little aspiring Diva.  The fur material lines the inside of the boot, which is great for warmth.  Socks are optional.  This pair is available in sizes 3-12.  I wish it was available in my size, because I’d love this boot for myself.

Best of all, I can hear my daughter coming and going with the squeaking sound.  There are times though when you want to keep those feet quiet, so the squeaker is removable.  It’s great to have that option.
